Ashley Soliman

Costume Designer for the world premiere of SWEET POTATO KICKS THE SUN

Ashley Soliman is a visual artist, award-winning costume designer, and former fine dining pastry cook. She favors materials and processes conducive to spontaneous irregularity, using geometric and botanical forms to explore surface pattern, environmental agita, and the domestic. The history and psychology of clothing and food fascinate her as well. She designed costumes for independent stage productions while employed by Jeff Fender as a textile painter and distresser on projects for Broadway, TV/film, opera, and dance. Recognized for her attention to color and detail, her designs have earned a NYITA nomination for Fatty Fatty No Friends (Mind the Art Entertainment) and praise from the Wall Street Journal for her “wacky contemporary costumes” in LoftOpera’s Le Comte Ory.

A first generation Chinese American, Soliman was born and raised in Chino Hills, California. She received her BFA in Fine Arts / Printmaking from the School of Visual Arts in New York. Soliman lives in Brooklyn, where she paints, draws, prints, and sews.
