JANUARY 30 – FEBRUARY 2, 2025
Jury Member: “The Basel Composition Competition” (BCC) - fifth edition - will take place from 30 January to 2 February 2025. Composers can register on the website www.baselcompetition.com until 13 September 2024, and submit a new, unpublished work for chamber or symphony orchestra. The distinguished jury consists of jury president and composer Michael Jarrell, as well as internationally renowned composers Liza Lim, Augusta Read Thomas, Andrea L. Scartazzini, and the director of the Paul Sacher Foundation Dr. Florian Besthorn. After the application deadline, they will select ten to twelve compositions, which will be announced on 30 September. In February 2025, the Basel Chamber Orchestra, the Basel Symphony Orchestera, and the Basel Sinfonietta will perform those at the Don Bosco Music and Cultural Center in Basel. The three to four best compositions will be awarded at a final concert on 2 February 2025 and will receive prize money totaling CHF 100,000, including an audience award, which will be presented for the first time in 2025. GUEST COMPOSER at the Weiwuyung Festival curated by Unsuk Chin and Maris Gothoni. Taking place in the National Performing Arts Center, National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts in Kaohsiung City 830043, Taiwan. Selected compositions will be performed.

AUREOLE for orchestra, performed by the University of South Carolina Symphony conducted by Edvan Rodrigues Moraes in the Koger Center for the Arts, Columbia, SC.

Augusta Read Thomas curated a program titled Thoughts and Riddles that blends her own music with that of longtime friends of the Orchestra of St. Luke's and emerging composers she has mentored, in honor of Orchestra of St. Luke's 50th anniversary. TOFT SERENADE for violin and piano; BEBOP RIDDLE V for flute and clarinet; and A CIRCLE AROUND THE SUN for piano trio will be performed. Mentor Composer for the Orchestra of St. Luke’s DeGaetano Composition Institute, New York City with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s conducted by Brad Lubman.

CALENDAR YEARS 2025 & 2026
World premiere of NEW WORK for solo cello and orchestra, premiered by cellist Alban Gerhardt and co-commissioned by several orchestras including The BBC National Orchestra of Wales, conducted by Ryan Bancroft, the Lahti Symphony Orchestra, The Swedish Chamber Orchestra, and other orchestras to be announced.
